How do I make a form field required or optional?

Each field in the form editor has a requirement toggle. Turn it on to make the field mandatory. Required fields show an asterisk on the public form, and submissions are blocked with a "Field is required" error if they are empty. The Email field is an exception: it is always required and cannot be made optional.
